The year was 1968, and Walter Leck was 17 years old and working as farm hand on a local farm. One day he was approached by the owner of a local trash company in Newtown Pa. The owner asked Walter if he would be interested in working as laborer on the back of his garbage truck. It sound like a great opportunity because the pay was 50 cents an hour more then he was currently making as a farm hand. Thus, Walter decided that it was time to make a career move and start his new life as a garbage man.

Walter continued to work for the local trash company "Don Edwards Disposal" for about three years, when one day his new boss became ill and asked Walter if he thought that he could drive the garbage truck for him. Walter thought to himself, I've been driving farm equipment since I was 13 years old, why not drive a garbage truck. So Walter decided that he would give driving the garbage truck a try. After the first day of driving the truck he decided that he really loved his new job.

Walter continued to work with Don Edwards Disposal for a year or so more and then decided that it was time to move on in 1970 to further his career.  Walter then worked for another small family trash company for a brief time until early in 1971. While working for the other company Walter started to think that maybe all of his hard work should be earning him more money. And thats when he decided to start his own trash company.

While working for the other company, Walter was able to solicite and get his first 4 customers. He picked up their trash in his own pickup truck after he finished work every day with the other company. With his 4 customers and $12.00 a month gross salary it didn't take long for Walter to realize that this new business venture wouldn't last too long without more then 4 customers. And that's when it happened, Walters old boss Don Edwards approached Walter again for the second time and asked if he was interested in buying his company. Walter was ecstatic, he already knew the garbage business, and he knew that he could run it because he already had four years earlier for Don. There was only problem, Walter was only 20 years old. Although he had a solid business plan and was extreamly determined, every bank that he spoke with about lending him the money to purchase Don's company said the same thing, He just didn't have enough of a solid credit history because he was only 20 years old. Each bank keep telling him the same thing, they would only lend him the money if he had a co-signer for the loan.

At the same time in 1970, Walter's father George Leck Sr. owned his own landscaping company and worked as a florist and gardener.Walter approached his father and told him about his idea and the opportunity to buy Don's trash company. Walter asked George Sr. if he was interested in co-signing the loan for him so that he could buy Don's company. As any father would be with their 20 year old son, George Leck Sr. was extreamly apprehensive at first but he also knew that his son Walter was an extremely hard worker and was very dedicated to everything he had ever done in life to that point. George Sr. told Walt that he would sign for the loan but only if he retained some ownership in the company.

George continued to work as a landscaper for 4 more years while Walter started to grow the new trash company. George finally realized that it was time to get on board and make the new trash company flurish. And the rest as they say is history.

Thus, GEORGE LECK & SON INC. was formed by George Leck and his son Walter Leck in 1972.
